So why do I love natural hair?

Alafia People,
This is my first blog… So bear with me. I don’t know what to say which is a surprise as I am probably the most opinionated person I know. Well, maybe with the exception of my father.
So why do I love natural hair?? I love natural hair because it is absolutely, purely me… I love the way our hair coils on itself and when stretched it can sometimes be four times the coiled length. I love the way our hair feels when water hits it. I love how we can grow and comb out a big, bushy afro and that thing just stays put all day. It is amazing! How does a thick afro defy gravity? That should be the age-old question!
I love that when you twist or braid our hair, the kink in it acts as its own natural rubber band.
Oh and let’s not forget locs… Magnificent and glorious locs! Have you ever wondered why no two heads of locs look alike? I love that locs are our own spiritual antennae. I love that they go through the different stages: Baby locs, oh so cute. Teenage locs, oh so rebellious and misunderstood; but want to be loved. Mature locs, oh so fly and sexy and do what they are supposed to.
I love the versatility of locs. What scrunchy? I don’t need a scrunchy! I’ve got locs!
Love your hair
Touch your hair
Play with your hair
Don’t take it too seriously, it’s just hair; but do, by all means, take care of it.
Hydrate internally, and moisturize externally.
That’s my hairlosophy guys, till next time.
Remember: Be your natural self.

Here is my perspective. I went natural for a commonly known reason called..convenience. My youngest child was born and filling up my life and I needed to release some pressure. One day out of nowhere..I said to my husband “cut it off”. That was back in the year 2000..and I have never looked back. I love my natural hair and now that my WHOLE family sports natural styles, it really is special.
It’s wearing your natural hair that will free you..just wearing it!!!

Loved the post. I went natural almost 2 years ago due to my hair’s RELAXER REBELLION! It took me almost 14 months to transition my mind to like my natural hair. I love it now though. Itohan really helped me with that part.
The best part is no worries about what my hair looks like when it is raining outside!!! It does not matter because my twist out will look the same. What a time saver! LOL

I met Ithohan during the summer of 09′ - it was super HOT and HUMID and I was determined to find a stylist who could braid my hair. I usually never get braids because my hair is very fine, and my edges are very sensitive. I lucked up and happened to come across Ithohan’s website, I gave her a call and set up a consultation. From the beginning she was adamant about which styles my hair could handle and which styles my hair could not handle. I must say her honesty was truly refreshing. Not only did we spend hours talking about the health of my hair, she also took the time to show me how to properly care for my hair while it was braided. It was clear from that point on that her sole concern was to improve the health of my hair.
I got Nubian Twists for the first time, and after that I was hooked. Initially, I was not interested in going natural, although I adored my twists I couldn’t imagine giving up the bounce and movement of my relaxed hair. But, I kept going to Ithohan to get braids and rod sets to try to extend the amount of time between relaxers. My original goal was to extend my relaxers from every 3 months to every 6 months. But, to my surprise I have now gone 8 months without a relaxer, and I am doing just fine!!! I love my hair… It is sooooo much thicker and healthier. Being in Ithohan’s environment has definitely changed my perspective on natural hair. Natural hair is so intriguing, I have sat in her shop for hours just watching her style locs, twists, and braids while I daydream about the day when she will be able to style my hair like that. I love Ithohan – she is so honest and open with her clientele. Over the past year and a half she has also become a great friend. If you are considering giving Ithohan a try please do not hesitate, I promise she will not disappoint.
